The coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic is probably Europe’s most severe crisis since World War II. Numerous scientists are researching this novel virus so we can ultimately combat it effectively. Agricultural systems of the Future is exploring this topic as well. What are the effects of this crisis on the everyday lives of people, for example in terms of nutrition?

Many people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are now dramatically altering their day-to-day lives in the face of looming bans on going out and the fear of food shortages, serious illness and death. Yet “corona parties” are still happening as well, and some people are not at all concerned about becoming infected.

What are the effects of this dramatic crisis on people’s everyday lives? How does the coronavirus affect mental health, consumption, eating and shopping habits, social cohesion and what we expect from politics and administration? How do these factors develop over time, with new information about the virus and new government measures? Agricultural systems of the Future is exploring these questions and has launched the “Living with Corona” cooperative project (International Security and Development Center (ISDC), IDS/UNU-WIDER and the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops).

Living with Corona captures the voices and moods of citizens in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, providing substantiated answers to these questions. It is a non-profit Citizen Science Project based on the latest scientific methods and findings.
